Laser Treatments Q & A

How are tattoos removed with lasers?

The colored pigments in tattoo ink selectively absorb lasers of specific wavelengths. As a result, Dr. Saluja can use a laser to remove your tattoo without harming the surrounding skin and tissues.

As colored ink absorbs the laser’s energy, it’s heated to a temperature that shatters the ink particles. Then your body safely absorbs and eliminates the tiny fragments of ink.

What are the different types of lasers used for tattoo removal?

Dr. Saluja uses two advanced lasers for tattoo removal:

PicoSure®

The PicoSure laser is a state-of-the-art, super-fast device that emits pulses lasting just one picosecond (one-trillionth of a second). Compared to other lasers, short-pulse lasers pulverize ink into smaller pieces that are easier for your body to clear away. They’re also great for hard-to-remove ink colors and multicolored tattoos.

How do lasers diminish scars?

Dr. Saluja offers several laser treatments, so she can individualize treatment based on the type and depth of your scar. One type of laser, a fractional laser, reaches below the scar without harming the surrounding skin.

In the deeper tissues, heat from the fractional laser triggers new skin growth and boosts collagen and elastin production. As new tissues rebuild your skin, they replace the scar, significantly diminishing or eliminating the scar.

Laser skin resurfacing is another useful option for treating scars. It eliminates some of the scars by removing the outer layer of skin; then it also stimulates collagen, elastin, and new skin growth.

How are veins treated with lasers?

Just as lasers can target tattoo colors, they also operate at a wavelength that’s absorbed by hemoglobin pigments in your veins. Heat from the laser makes the blood coagulate, and the vein breaks down, then the waste is absorbed and eliminated.

Per her dedication to offering the latest technology and customized treatment based on each patient’s unique needs, Dr. Saluja has several laser devices for vein treatment. Whether she uses the gold-standard pulsed dye laser (PDL), the Nd:YAG laser, or intense-pulsed light (IPL), you can get safe and effective treatment for:

  • Spider veins on your face
  • Port wine stains
  • Hemangioma
  • Venous lakes of the lips
